An Apple a Day

An Apple a Day...

During the fall months, one fruit rises above the rest. Apple, scientifically known as Malus pumila or Malus domestica, is one of the most sought-after fruits in the world. Beverages and foods made from or containing apples are an estimated 10 billion dollar global industry. This includes wines, ciders, vinegars, apple chips, apple fritters, applesauce, apple pie, etc.

Besides this, apples are known for their wellness support. Apples contain a compound called flavonoids. This phytochemical has been shown to help lower the risk of death from any cause. Additionally, apples contain malic, citric, and tartaric acids that help support the liver with digestion. They also contain soluble and insoluble fiber to support a healthy bowel.

Apples can be protective against diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. One study evaluated women with cancer, and researchers found an apple a day reduced the risk of lung cancer by over 20%. Eating apples may also lower the risk of developing asthma. Finally, apples are a great source of zinc, which supports growth and immune function.

The nutritional value of an apple depends upon how it is prepared/manufactured. The fresher and less processed the fruit, the more beneficial it can be. Despite that, apples are great in any recipe! As always, talk to your nutritionist or doctor before adding anything new to your lifestyle.
