Boswellia For Inflammation

Boswellia (Boswellia serrata), often known as frankincense, is native to India, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. This tree creates a gummy oleo-resin harvested by peeling strips of bark away. In addition to supporting health, boswellia was traditionally used to improve emotional well-being. Burning the incense is said to enhance mental perception and consciousness.

Boswellic acid is one of the active components of this resin. Research shows this acid is helpful in treating a wide variety of chronic inflammatory diseases. These include rheumatoid arthritis, chronic bronchitis, asthma, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease. Boswellia serrata extract can reduce pain and improve function in the painful area. Additionally, boswellia targets enzymes that may improve conditions such as asthma and chronic bronchitis. At this time, research is limited.

Boswellia is regarded as safe though it should be avoided in pregnancy. Due to its fatty nature, the resin is best taken with food to improve absorption. For inflammatory conditions, 400 mg three times a day is suggested. The resin can be solo in a product or paired with other substances. Boswellia can also be used topically for skin inflammation such as acne. As always, discuss this with your doctor before adding any new supplements to your diet.
