Cucumbers and the Art of Skincare

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is farmed worldwide as a seasonal crop. Native to India, cucumber is a fruit found growing wild in the Himalayas. Cucumbers are composed mostly of water and contain trace minerals and vitamin C. Used in Asian cultures as medicine, it can support a healthy blood sugar and cholesterol as well as prevent constipation. It was used for centuries to clean the skin.

Cucumbers are full of antioxidants and compounds great for skincare. The fruit has antibacterial activity against bacteria like E. coli and Staph. aureus. Research also shows cucumber pulp is helpful with dry, scaly, rough, or red skin. And, extracts of the leaves have been shown to help prevent melanosis or skin discoloration. Cucumber has a natural SPF and can be helpful with fine lines and wrinkles. With so many benefits, it’s no wonder cosmetic companies often put cucumber in their products.

The pulp of the fresh fruit can be scooped out and applied directly to your skin. This may be helpful with mild sunburn directly after exposure. You can always add it to other oils and herbs to make a skin-nourishing mixture. If you don’t have the time to make your own, many commercial skin preparations use cucumber extract. You may also consider putting cucumber slices on your eyes to reduce puffiness at home. As always, speak to your doctor or esthetician before making lifestyle changes.

Additionally, you can always add fresh, fermented (such as pickles), or cooked cucumbers to your diet as another way to incorporate cucumbers into your life.
