Nature's Aphrodisiac
Damiana (Turnera diffusa) is native to Mexico and other Latin American countries. It grows in higher elevations in semiarid areas and reaches 12-20 inches tall. North American Indians used damiana as a muscle tonic and to regain strength after alcoholic and sexual excesses. Known as a potent plant aphrodisiac, this calming plant is becoming more popular.
Damiana has been found to be a uterine tonic and may have a positive effect on blood sugar levels. In general, the Turnera species seems to have a positive effect on gastric diseases through their anti-inflammatory actions. These plants have been found to be effective against microbes which can cause gastrointestinal upset. There is also evidence stating it may be protective against ulcers.
In regards to damiana's traditional use for fertility and as an aphrodisiac, the jury is still out. Animal studies show positive effects in rats, but there has been little formal research in humans. Overall, most studies on damiana and other Turnera species plants have been done on animals, so a lot more research needs to be done in the future.
Damiana has been used around the world as a tea, tincture, supplements, and also as a smoking herb. It is generally recognized as safe in food or prescribed supplement amounts. Due to a lack of safety studies, damiana should be avoided by children and pregnant or breastfeeding women. As always, speak with your healthcare provider before adding any new supplements.
