Getting to the 'Root' of Grounding Mats

Grounding, sometimes called 'earthing,' involves connecting your body to the Earth. Grounding embraces the Earth and all the living things on it as part of a global electrical system. The idea of improving human health by touching the earth was suggested over 130 years ago. Nowadays, humans make plastic shoes, drive cars with rubber tires, and live in insulated homes furnished with man-made furniture. With so much technological advancement, humans are becoming more disconnected from the Earth.

Some studies suggest grounding mats may be helpful. Most of these studies have been small, but the results are promising. For example, one study evaluated grounding during sleep nightly for eight weeks. Cortisol patterns normalized during the day, and most subjects reported their sleep improved with lower pain and stress levels. Though small, a few studies showed grounding may reduce immune system response (less redness, heat, swelling, pain, and loss of function). This seems to indicate acute injuries may heal faster. Research also suggests grounding may help with anxiety and depression.

One way to add this into your life is by purchasing a grounding mat, otherwise known as an earthing mat. There are many companies on the market, so do your research to see what will work best for you. Products such as grounding sheets/blankets, clothes, jewelry, etc. are commercially available options if a grounding mat is not right for you. If you are looking to spend less money you could always pop your shoes off and walk barefoot or lie down in the grass or sand.

Grounding is well-tolerated by almost everyone, and it's an easy way to reconnect with nature to support a healthier you. However, you should always ask a qualified health professional before beginning any new practice.
