Panax Ginseng for Lung Health

Panax ginseng, also known as Asian ginseng, has been well-known for thousands of years for its medicinal properties. It’s primarily an adaptogen and restorative tonic used today in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western herbal formulas. This herb should not be confused with other ginsengs like Panax quinquefolius or Siberian ginseng (not a true ginseng). Roots from five-year-old plants or older are more potent than roots from younger plants. Additionally, there are two distinct forms of Panax ginseng, red and white. This has to do with processing methods, and they also have slightly different medicinal qualities.

In general, this herb is a great overall health tonic that can help support a variety of systems to be healthier. Panax can help naturally boost energy and help support the body with a variety of infections. It is an immune modulator, helping the body increase or decrease immune system response as needed. It can also help maintain a healthy blood sugar, support healthy memory, and may also help prevent cancer. Research is ongoing to prove Panax’s positive effects on respiratory infections and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Panax can be taken as a tea, tincture, or capsule. If you are pregnant, seek advice from your holistic health practitioner before taking ginseng. In the vast majority of people, Panax is well-tolerated with no side effects. Possible side effects can include trouble sleeping, increased heart rate, blood pressure changes, headaches, and diarrhea due to the herbs’ more stimulating nature. Talk to your doctor to see if Panax is a good option for your health goals.
