A Superfood for Men
Pumpkin seeds from the Cucurbita moschata, Cucurbita pepo, and Cucurbita maxima species, are more than just a fun food to eat in the fall. Pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, can be a very healthy addition to the average diet. One ounce of pumpkin seeds contains nearly 9 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber as well as over 40% of the required manganese, copper, and magnesium. They contain 20% of an adult’s daily zinc recommendation and 24% of iron. Pepitas also contain many unsaturated plant oils, some of which are essential to human health.
Pumpkin has been explored in several scientific studies and has been linked to men’s health. Pumpkin seed oil, in addition to its healthy fats and minerals, can improve sexual health. Research shows pumpkin may improve sexual performance by improving sexual stimulation and delaying orgasm. Loaded with antioxidants, it can also improve sperm production and fertility. It also has been used in studies to help with benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH). There were little to no side effects, and there was a 40% urinary symptom improvement after 12 weeks of regular use.
It may also encourage hair growth in men with hormone-related hair loss. One study found a 40% increase in hair growth after 24 weeks of taking pumpkin seed oil. Finally, it may improve narrowed blood vessels (arteriosclerosis), high blood pressure, risk of heart disease, and be helpful with diabetes.
Eating pumpkin seeds or drizzling pumpkin seed oil over salads or other foods may be the best whole-food approach. Pumpkin seed oil supplements are also available if a capsule is preferred. As always, talk with a trusted health professional before adding new foods or supplements.
