Rosemary - Dew of the Sea

Dew of the Sea

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is an aromatic evergreen shrub that is native to the Mediterranean region. It tolerates mildly cold climates but doesn't do well in regions that get colder than twenty degrees Fahrenheit. The name comes from Latin ros maris meaning ‘dew of the sea'. It was later called rosemary in honor of the Virgin Mary. Rosemary has traditionally been associated with memory and remembering the past. In Roman times, students wore rosemary in their hair to improve their memory. It was also used as a funeral flower to symbolize memories of loved ones.

This herb is strongly antioxidant and antimicrobial, and it is being studied for use as a natural food preservative. Rosemary can be helpful with an upset stomach or mild spasms in the gastrointestinal tract. It's also helpful by reducing inflammation, pain, and protects the liver. In Europe, it is used for mild muscle or joint pain. It also supports mild circulatory conditions in the arms and legs. Additionally, research shows rosemary does seem to improve memory and more studies are being conducted.

This herb can be used in several ways. It is a great herb to use in cooking, especially with lamb. It can be taken as a cup of tea or as a tincture a couple of times daily. Springs of the plant can be used in a bath or worn on the body for a pleasant aroma and memory support.

It's not recommended for use with pregnant or nursing women or with young children under twelve due to a lack of safety studies. Use only under a doctor's supervision if you have any liver or gallbladder disease. To see if rosemary is a good fit for you, have a chat with your local holistic health practitioner.
