What's Strontium?

Strontium was first discovered in 18th-century Scotland. It's an abundant trace mineral found in the earth's oceans and crust. Comparable to calcium, its function in the body is similar though it's only present in humans in small amounts. Besides bone health, strontium also has an effect on heart, parathyroid, and uterine function.

Studies show patients with osteoporosis had increased bone mass, less bone pain, and stronger bones with strontium supplementation. Strontium is thought to increase bone building while at the same time reducing bone breakdown. Osteoclasts, the cells that break down bone, have reduced cell function when exposed to strontium. Osteoblasts, the cells that build bone, can significantly increase bone density in as little as 14 days with strontium support.

Strontium is available in supplement form, the most studied being strontium ranelate. But it can also be consumed by eating leafy greens, grains, and seafood. For best absorption strontium should not be taken at the same time as calcium supplements and always be taken with food. Be cautious using strontium if you have a history of blood clots or cardiovascular disease. Some evidence suggests it may increase the risk of blood clots. Be sure to ask your doctor if strontium is right for you.
