Decomposing for Health
Health trends come and go depending on the year. Vitamin D, vitamin E, raw food diet, intermittent fasting, etc… these trends change quickly over the years with varying benefits. Fulvic acid, although entering as a fad, could be here to stay.
What is Fulvic Acid?
Humic substances are a class of compounds that are by-products of the organic breakdown of microorganisms. These substances are naturally occurring compounds found in soils, marine sediments, and even sewage. It can be made with compost from rotting vegetables for example. Fulvic acid, a type of humic substance, is yellow in color, has a high oxygen content, is soluble at all pH levels, and is smaller in size than other humic substances.
Positive Effects of Fulvic Acid
Fulvic acid has been the subject of several research studies though more work needs to be done. Relatively recently, fulvic acid was evaluated for its anti-inflammatory properties. A couple of small studies found it is comparable to steroid creams when used topically for wheals and eczema. Patients did report a burning sensation when used on eczema. It has been shown to reduce proinflammatory substances in cells, meaning it may be helpful with allergies and asthma. Surprisingly, it is also pro-inflammatory. It stimulates immune reactions in wounds with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, reducing wound size. Thus, fulvic acid appears to be an immune modulator.
Additionally, it seems to support healthy gut flora, nutrient absorption, and may be helpful with gut disorders. Research is looking into its potential benefits in those with type 2 diabetes. Inflammation, proinflammatory markers, and gut health indicate fulvic acid may be very beneficial in this population.
Is It Safe to Use?
Research has found fulvic acid to be well-tolerated in animal studies, even at high doses, for short amounts of time (less than 90 days). Fulvic acid can be purchased singly in liquid or capsule form from local health stores. Alternatively, it can be purchased as Shilajit, a traditional folk medicine found in mountain ranges around the world. It contains fulvic acid and other compounds, and it has been used in a variety of health conditions including genitourinary and nervous system diseases, anemia, chronic bronchitis, etc. As always, consult with a health professional before changing lifestyle habits.
