Grab Yourself a Cup of Sunshine

Melissa officinalis, also known as lemon balm, bee balm, or honey balm, is a perennial plant that is grown all over the world. It grows in a wide variety of soil conditions and elevations from sea level to the mountains. Lemon balm can be used for a wide variety of health concerns, and research is still ongoing. Traditionally it was used for headaches, indigestion, nausea, nervousness/hysteria, depression, or epilepsy among other conditions. It is a sedative, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antispasmodic herb.

Due to its effect on the nervous system, lemon balm has been shown to help improve anxiety, depression, and insomnia, which is great for those looking for another way to improve their mental well-being during months with less sunshine. It is also antimicrobial with studies showing it is effective at treating herpes viruses. Lemon balm contains rosmarinic acid which can help reduce pain through its anti-inflammatory action. Research has shown if lemon balm is consumed via tea or foods it can have a measurable effect on stress management. This herb is generally well-tolerated.

This plant is an easy one for beginning gardeners to grow, but it's important to note that it easily spreads. If you've been considering growing your own medicine at home, you can dry this herb for tea in the winter, or tincture it in alcohol to preserve it through the winter months. It can also be used to infuse vinegar to add a mild lemon flavor. One great way to incorporate lemon balm into your routine is by making yourself a soothing cup of lemon balm tea.

The number of leaves people enjoy in their tea can vary widely, so feel free to experiment to get the flavor right. If you are using fresh leaves, use roughly five leaves per cup. If you are using dried leaves approximately two tablespoons are about right and be sure to crush the leaves up with your fingers before adding them to your tea cup. Next, add boiling water and let it steep for five to ten minutes, strain, and enjoy!
